• Kids deep in self-chosen work or play — engagement is the point at this age; worksheets are not kindergarten readiness.
• Teacher longevity — ask how long the lead has taught this room (question one of the tour ten).
• What "kindergarten readiness" means to them — strong answers mention self-regulation, peer skills and being read to, not just letters.
• A screen policy you can live with — and whether "movie afternoons" are routine or rare.
• Observed circle time — are children participating or being managed?
